TO­DAY’S HIS­TORY: In 1908, Pres­i­dent Theodore Roo­sevelt de­clared the Grand Canyon a na­tional mon­u­ment.

In 1922, in­sulin was ad­min­is­tered to a di­a­betic pa­tient for the first time; the ex­tract would re­quire fur­ther im­prove­ment be­fore achiev­ing suc­cess.

In 1964, the U.S. sur­geon gen­eral is­sued the first U.S. govern­ment re­port con­clud­ing that smok­ing could be haz­ardous to health.

In 2003, de­part­ing Illi­nois Gov. Ge­orge Ryan com­muted the sen­tences of an un­prece­dented 156 death row in­mates.

TO­DAY’S FACT: Alexan­der Hamil­ton was born to a poor fam­ily on the Caribbean is­land of Ne­vis. Con­flict­ing sets of records leave it un­clear whether he was born in 1755 or 1757.

TO­DAY’S SPORTS: In 1973, Ma­jor League Base­ball own­ers voted in ap­proval of a 10th lineup po­si­tion for Amer­i­can League ros­ters, al­low­ing a “des­ig­nated pinch-hit­ter” to bat for the pitcher while al­low­ing the pitcher to stay in the game.

TO­DAY’S MOON: Be­tween new moon (Jan. 5) and first quar­ter moon (Jan. 13). At the CHUS de Fleu­ri­mont, Jan­uary 9th, 2019, passed away Mrs. Brenda Corey New­ton, wife of David New­ton, re­sid­ing in St-joachim.

She leaves to mourn her hus­band David, her chil­dren: Ash­ley, Reg­gie, Veron­ica (David); her mother: Bertha School­craft (late Wen­dell Corey) and mother in law Betty New­ton. She is sur­vived by her broth­ers and sis­ters: Billy Corey, Debbie Corey, Danny Corey. She also leaves to mourn her nieces and neph­ews: Al­lan, Justin, Alyssa, Brian; her brother-in-law Dale New­ton (Manon), other rel­a­tives, and friends. The fam­ily will re­ceive con­do­lences at LES RÉSI­DENCES FUNÉRAIRES BES­SETTE IN WATER­LOO, on Jan­uary 18th, 2019, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. as well as on Jan­uary 19th, 2019, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., fol­lowed by the fu­neral ser­vice in the chapel. In­ter­ment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flow­ers, do­na­tions to the Di­a­betes As­so­ci­a­tion of Canada would be ap­pre­ci­ated.
