TGreat philosophy to begin the school year.

he floors had a special shine throughout the school. The gym floor was so polished that it reflected light shining through the windows. But the newest thing for the students was the refurbished cafeteria. There are a few finishing touches to be added, but the new additions in the kitchen are making the lunch ladies very happy and the students too. New tables will be in very soon in the eating area.

After lunch on the first day, an assembly with all students took place in the gym. Even on the first day, most students were in their school colours. The room was full. Ms. Renalee Gore, the principal of Knowlton Academy, welcomed all the students, both new and returning. Like most schools in the Eastern Townships School Board, the population has risen. What a healthy sign!

Prominent in the office area is a sign, which reads, “Find joy in the journey!” That can apply to those beginning the school year, but it is also a good philosophy for us all.

As the students came off the buses, they were greeted by the principal, Anne Stairs, and by Ms. Becky Blinn. Then they made their way to the playground, where oohs and aahs were heard as they spied the new running track that is part of the new pavement installed this past summer. Along the new pavement were pencils and on each pencil was the name of a student. Hopefully all the students were united with their new pencils by the start of the day.

Last year Ms. Laura Barr retired as the music specialist. This year Heroes’ will have an art teacher for two days a week: Ms. Rosemary Scott. Ms. Scott loves art and she has often given art lessons while substituting in classes since her retirement. Ms. Barr will be doing some form of music on a volunteer basis with the choir and band.

Heroes’ has a Pre K this year for four year olds. The student population in general continues to rise.

At the end of September Heroes’ will be participating in the annual Terry Fox Run. This is a big event for this school in Cowansville.

The day started with everyone smiling: parents, students, teachers and other staff, and the principal too! That’s a good way to begin the new school year.
