Submitted by Canadian Club of the Yamaska Valley
The Canadian Club of the Yamaska Valley will hold a meeting on Monday, October 7, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Auberge West Brome, 128 Provincial Router 139.
Kevin Ka’nahson Deer will lecture on “Honouring the International Year of Indigenous Languages: Exploring Connections Between Language and Culture”; as decreed by the United Nations for 2019. Mr. Deer is from the Kahawake Mohawk Territory where he is an Elder, teacher of the Mohawk language and a Faithkeeper at the Mohawk Trail Longhouse. He enjoys presenting and discussing Iroquoian world views, history and philosophy. Previous engagements were a speech at the Bretton Woods (New Hampshire) IV convocation, a presentation during the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week in New York and a welcoming ceremony for the World Forum on Theology and Liberation in Montréal. He is currently lecturing at secondary schools and public forums throughout Québec, under the auspices of QAHN (Québec Anglophone Heritage Network).
Kevin will speak about the different aspects of native languages and how meaning and context can become obscured when translating from Mohawk to English.
After the presentation there will be a “Q & A” followed by a coffee/tea social – a chance to chat with Kevin and, as usual, each other. To enjoy an Auberge West Brome lunch please reserve at 450-2667552/1-888-902-7663. Club information is available at 450-243-6524.
The meeting is free for members/$10 fee for non-members. Memberships are still available.
