While the deadline approaches for mandatory masks in closed public spaces, the province continues to report over 100 new cases of COVID-19 every day.

There were five new deaths reported in the last 24 hours bringing the total in the province to 5,633 and 109 new confirmed cases of the virus for a total of 56,730 in the province.

In the Estrie region, one new case was reported in the last day for a total of 981. Of those, 931 are considered recovered.

There are 295 Covid-related hospitalizations in the province, and 21 of those patients are in intensive care.

According to the Quebec Public Health Institute’s website 26,025 people have recovered from COVID-19.

Masks will be mandatory in all closed public spaces including bars, restaurants and retail shops starting this Saturday. The rule is already in effect for public transit.

When moving within an establishment (entering, exiting or using the restroom), citizens are required to wear a mask. Once they are seated in a bar or restaurant maintaining a two-meter distance from others, they can remove their mask.

Business owners will be responsible for enforcing the new rule and could face fines ranging from $400 to $6,000 if people are found in their establishments without a mask on.

Janet Watson discovered a symbol of Townships history just outside her home on Winder street yesterday afternoon; two glass bottles impossibly nailed to a telephone pole.

This incredible feat was the signature work of Bill Mccallum, an infamous man from Sawyerville who would nail glass bottles, plates, and other delicates to telephone posts all around town. The catch? Mccallum died in January of 1947, over 70 years ago.

Since his death there has been a book written about his life, The Imps and Bill Mccallum by Freeman Clowery, as well as a play, written by Ann Rothfels. His grave is located at the Maple Leaf Cemetery on route 210 in Newport.

While Watson says she has a fairly good hunch this might be the work of a certain copycat trying to prove it isn’t so hard to nail some bottles to a post, she’s yet to see it done with her own eyes. The mystery lives on.
