“Intuition” on display at the Foreman Art Gallery

- Record Staff

The 23rd annual exhibition of the work of fine arts graduates at Bishop’s University is currently underway at the Foreman Art Gallery. Although public health directives imposed by the government to limit the spread of COVID-19, mean that the gallery was unable to hold an opening reception for the show, it remains possible to view the artworks either by registering for an in-person visit, or by viewing the virtal tour on the gallery’s website.

Organized around the theme of “intuition” by student curator Amélia Poirier, the exhibit features the works of graduating students Allister Aitken, Chantal Lafond, Francine Ethier, Lara Dion, Lily Rousseau, Nicholas Gibbs, and Steve Breton.

“Intuition is the common denominator in the creative processes of this graduating cohort,” Poirier shares in her description of the collection. “Beyond the subtle-butunmistakable influence of intuition on each individual practice, the works also attest to the knowledge instilled by the group’s professors.

Numerous strands entwine in these practices born of countless hours in the studio spent honing a personal visual language and experimenting with different mediums.”

The curator defines the term “intuition” as, “both instigator and faithful guardian of the will to stick to one’s convictions, come what may,” and underlines the value of such a force in the individual and diverse creative efforts of the artists in an academic year that has taken place in extraordinary circumstances.

“(Intuition) is deeply embedded in these works by Allister Aitken, Chantal Lafond, Francine Ethier, Lara Dion, Lily Rousseau, Nicholas Gibbs and Steve Breton, the genetic marker that reveals the unique identity of each through their art,” Poirier states.
