Public alcohol consumption allowed, with food, at Wellington-sur-mer

And if the government is unable to recognize school support staff workers, there could be a bigger problem in a few years.

Sherbrooke residents will be permitted to consume alcohol in the three Wellington-sur-mer developed public spaces this summer, but they must also follow certain conditions.

“For a second year, we will be offering a resort in the downtown area that will allow our population to take advantage of the beautiful days by taking a break and visiting our merchants,” said Sherbrooke Mayor Steve Lussier.

While people will be able to drink alcohol in Strathcona Square, the Urban Oasis and place Well Sud, next to the local employment centre, the public spaces are only open between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. from June 17 to Oct. 11.

The city will put up signs reminding people to carry plastic cups or cans, as well as highlighting the designated drinking area. There will also be increased supervision this summer in an effort to monitor alcohol consumption and table use.

People will be allowed to bring their own alcohol, buy a closed bottle, or purchase from restaurant owners with an appropriate alcohol permit. However, alcohol can only be consumed if it is accompanied by food.

According to a press release, after reviewing last year’s consultation results, compiled by Commerce Sherbrooke, city council determined the oasis was a success, prompting them to renew the project.

“I am particularly pleased that we have access to a lively downtown area, despite the health measures still in effect. This meets an undeniable need in the area,” said Chantal L’espérance, President of the Downtown Revitalization Committee.
