Exploring the history of Sherbrooke at the Mhist
The Sherbrooke Historical Museum (Mhist) will resume its Matinées découvertes (discovery mornings) this summer in the heart of the city.
Three tours are available to visitors. Each one highlights a part of the local past through commercial, architectural and religious history.
A new tour will be offered for the 2021 summer season: From Commercial Street to Wellington Street. This tour puts into perspective the shift of the commercial hub from Dufferin Street (formerly Commercial) to Wellington Street North. The past of the buildings still present and the key figures in the evolution of the downtown are on the menu.
The Belles du Nord tour is now a classic. Accompanied by a Mhist guide, the curious, architecture lovers and history buffs discover some of the secrets of a selection of old houses in the Dufferin,
Prospect, Elizabeth and Montreal Street sectors.
D’un clocher à l’autre (From one bell tower to another) allows visitors to discover the places of worship (current and former) in the downtown area, while learning more about the communities that have built Sherbrooke. A foray into the Plymouth Trinity Church is also on the program.
The Matinées découvertes are offered on a rotating basis from Thursday to Saturday from mid-june to the end of August. The detailed schedule is available on the museum’s website (www.mhist.org) and reservations can be made by contacting the Mhist (info@ mhist.org or 819-821-5406).
The walking tours last from 90 to 120 minutes and cost $8 per person.
As a nice “gourmet” novelty this year, the cost of the tour includes a discount at downtown Café-partner, Brûlerie FARO.
