Richmond Regional to host “Knight of the Arts” fundraiser
This Thursday, May 18 from 5-7 p.m., Richmond Regional High School is hosting its annual fundraising event “Knight of the Arts”, showcasing student artwork from the visual and industrial arts programs. Alongside theatre performances and musical productions from students of the drama and music programs, the art on display will be for sale with proceeds benefiting GRIS Estrie (Groupe de l’intervention de l’estrie), a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote a better understanding of sexual and gender diversity in the Eastern Townships.
“Knight of the Arts” is an opportunity for students of all the art streams at Richmond, whether it be drama, music, or industrial and visual arts, to display their work and creativity to the public. The event is free for all to attend and enjoy the event, and participants are encouraged to donate to the chosen non-profit, or purchase the art for sale. To put on this event, students volunteer to create art to be sold, as well as prepare, organize, and host the fundraiser.
Not only is this event an opportunity for students to communicate with the public about their various art and programs, but it is also a chance to give back to their community by supporting a local organization that is significant to them, with a new non-profit being chosen each year. According to RRHS’S art teacher, Julia Barrowman, GRIS Estrie has visited the high school on several occasions to answer various questions and spread awareness, and was chosen this year due to the numerous LGBT+ students taking part
in the event. As such, all funds raised from artwork sales and donations from the public will support GRIS Estrie’s work in local schools and other institutions to promote awareness of the diversity of sexual orientations and gender through testimonies from volunteers, as well as integrate people of the LGBT+ community into society. There will also be a representative from GRIS Estrie present at the event to explain their mission and answer any questions.
“Knight of the Arts” is supported through a student volunteerism grant from the Carrefour Jeunesse Emploi de Richmond, a community organization that aims to help young adults integrate into the workforce and assist them in their personal, social, and economic goals.
