- By Daniel Kirchin

The Eastern Townships is preparing for an exceptional astronomical event – a rare solar eclipse on Apr. 8, 2024. With a duration of only 3 minutes and 26 seconds, this celestial spectacle is drawing attention from both locals and visitors across the globe alike.

The Eastern Townships holds the distinction of being one of the few regions in Quebec entirely within the path of totality of the eclipse. This unique positioning promises visitors the opportunity to witness the total solar eclipse for several uninterrupted minutes, an experience unparalleled elsewhere.

Local entities are actively mobilizing to organize a range of activities across the Eastern Townships to mark the occasion. Companies such as Tourisme Cantonsde-l’est have crafted itineraries encompassing gastronomy, culture, relaxation, and adventure, ensuring visitors make the most of the eclipse experience. The region’s attractions, accommodations, and restaurants are expected to be open and accessible during this period, as announced by TCE in a press statement.

In various regions such as Mégantic and Haut-saint-françois, planned activities include guided observations, outdoor animations, and special events. Mont Mégantic, renowned as Quebec’s astronomy capital, will host a significant event with limited capacity, necessitating ticket reservations in advance. Other municipalities within the International Dark Sky Reserve will also offer designated observation points and broadcast activities for public viewing.

Speaking about Haut-saintfrancois, Robert G. Roy, prefect of the MRC du Haut-saint-françois said “In the Haut, twelve of our fourteen municipalities are following suit to make the total solar eclipse of the

April 8 an event that will be remembered. The enthusiasm of Haut-saint-françois for this astronomical activity reveals our strong feeling of belonging to the Mont-mégantic International Dark Sky Reserve.”

Sherbrooke, Memphrémagog, and Coaticook regions are also gearing up for eclipse-related gatherings, both indoors and outdoors. From exclusive gatherings at educational institutions such as Bishop’s and Udes to hiking expeditions and cultural events, various options will be available.

The Townships is primed to offer a memorable experience for those seeking to witness the rare solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. With a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and astronomical wonders.

This eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse to be visible in the provinces of Canada since February 26, 1979, the first in Mexico since

July 11, 1991, and the first in the U.S. since August 21, 2017. It will be the only total solar eclipse in the 21st century where totality will be visible in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It will also be the last total solar eclipse visible in the Contiguous United States until August 23, 2044.
