Young leaders hold Q&A session with SQ officer, Dorothée Fortin
The Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) weekly youth program includes a young leadership group held on Thursdays at the Youth Centre in Mansonville. The group welcomes youth after school to 5 p.m. and strives to instill knowledge, promote healthy decision making and informative exchanges on a variety of topics for youth who want to improve their leadership and community involvement skills. Much like the older SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) program, this group aims to build on these skills in younger youth.
On Thursday, April 4, the Leadership group hosted Dorothée Fortin (local police officer with the Sûreté du Québec - Mrc de Memphrémagog) for an information session where the group learned more about Dorothée and her profession. Dorothée’s confident and motivated attitude was infectious as the group asked her questions for over an hour!
By the end of the session, the group had dispelled many myths as seen about the police in movies and television. The group was pleased to know that law was in the hands of people like Dorothée as they found out that helping anyone who needs it is at the forefront of the Sûreté du Québec’s cause.
Dorothée seemed determined to exchange with the youth with honesty, respect and while having fun too. No question was considered silly and the demonstrations and scenarios acted out with the youth were engaging and very informative.
Dorothée has done many
presentations to much larger and older age groups but she was really surprised at how prepared, forthcoming and attentive the group was. With a few less participants than usual due to the snowstorm, animators were worried that the session would not go as planned but were surprised when the time passed so quickly and the youth were so engaged and interested.
“We’re extending the deepest thanks to Dorothée for her time this afternoon and for satisfying our curious minds,” said Youth Centre Coordinator, Ethan Ball.
