Traditional French Canadian sugar shack breakfast- a sweet success!
On Thursday, April 18 the Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) Senior program organized a traditional French Canadian sugar shack breakfast in Potton at the Feather in the Wind Senior Centre 309 Principale in Mansonville. With a limited number of spaces available, tickets were sold in advance.
The meal consisted of a variety of homemade goodies including: pea soup, baked beans, fresh fluffy rolls, creton, baked ham with an optional mustard sauce, sausages, eggs, crepes, home fries, homemade fudge, maple sugar pie… coffee, tea and juice. With the plethora of food the event quickly became an “all you can eat” with folk dabbing in seconds of their favourite sweet treats! At the end of the meal, containers of take-home treats were sold to those wanting a little something to bring home to enjoy. The cost per person was $20.
With tickets limited to 40 persons a nice crowd gathered to enjoy the atmosphere with traditional sugar shack music setting the ambiance as friends gathered and shared in the sweet treats of the spring season. Many asked if the event might be considered as an annual thing?
Organizers Lucie Beaudoin, CABMN Coordinator of Senior Services and Angelle Laplume, Animator of Senior Services at the CABMN along with volunteers, Carmen Aubin, Pierrette Denis, Mary and Rolande Lachance and the many who also contributed to the sweet meal were delighted with the turnout and the feedback.
“I am always looking for different ways and events to stimulate and motivate seniors to get out and enjoy life,” said Beaudoin. “It brings those of us who organize these things a lot of joy
to see so many smiling faces,” she added.
Stopping by to do a few dishes, I personally enjoyed the chatter and laughter in the kitchen as these seasoned women brought the event to life and then continued with positivity doing the clean up after. The infectious expression of sincere joy at knowing they had again achieved and mastered another worthwhile activity was all the gratitude they needed.
“I am so grateful to my team,” shared Beaudoin. “A leader alone accomplishes far less than someone who leads working in respect and gratitude with
an amazing team; I am so lucky to have these people volunteering who do so much,” she concluded.
For long time senior services guru, Angelle Laplume who continues to work two days per week at the CAB, after thirty plus years, she sums it up as follows:
“As long as I am still having fun, and I am, I’m not going anywhere!”
