News from the Lennoxville Curling Club
The Lennoxville Curling Club concluded another very active curling season by running a couple of events this past week before the cooling system was shut down until late September. Mark Humphrey, who coordinates Kurling 4 Kids activities at the club, and his crew ran a mini bonspiel Saturday, April 13. Following this, the annual Closing Bonspiel under direction of the match chairman, Ralph Fanning, concluded on April 20
with the finals.
The Kurling 4 Kids is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children. The Lennoxville Curling Club’s proceeds are going to the CHUS Foundation to be used to purchase needed equipment. This year the amount projected to be raised is well over $30,000.
This year 24 teams signed up to play in the closing Bonspiel with the stipulation that at least one new
person, who was new to curling, was to be included on each team. Some 31 “newbies” answered the call to participate - and yes, they did so with enthusiasm . There were many keen and competitive matches on the ice and while off the ice, curlers of the club and their guests enjoyed a seasonending catered dinner.
In the final games: In the main event for the Wallace Bowl, the ever-popular Pierrette Charbonneau skipped her rink to victory over last year’s winning skip - President Ralph Rourke. She managed to seal the game by getting her final counter hidden behind a rock pile of guards which Ralph couldn’t get at. In the consolation event, the outcome was decided by some outstanding shots by Josée Rourke’s team to hold off a hard challenge from Vice-president George Fowlis’ rink.
