Conservation Lac Brome
Impact on the health of Brome Lake. ‘, he explained, as he presented CLB’S annual report to partners, major donors, elected municipal officials and representatives of local and regional organizations on April 12.
The year 2023 saw also a name change to Conservation Lac Brome and a first-ever proactive, waterbased community outreach program, the ‘Patrouille Bleue’. CLB is constantly fine-tuning its efforts to raise awareness of environmentally critical issues in the community. CLB wants all lake stakeholders to be aware of how their actions impact an increasingly fragile and threatened lake. The torrential rains experienced in 2023 had many consequences for Brome Lake, the President recalled. These included increasing the amount of phosphorus and sediments rushing into the lake, causing transparency to drop from 4.25 m to just 2 m after the downfall of July 20.
The effects continued through to October, indicating a high level of algae and suspended solids in the water column. The particularly hot and sunny month of September gave rise to a major blue-green algae bloom, which lasted several days and
covered a large part of the lake.
To meet these and future challenges and monitor the state of the lake and its tributaries, CLB now has nine of 12 board positions filled. “Our board members keep the organization running smoothly and volunteer their time to execute our projects. We need reinforcements!” concluded President Jean-pierre-pilon, calling for candidates to fill the three vacant seats.
