Join “Women Walk the World” on April 29 outside Emmanuel United Church

- By Louise Smith

On Monday, April 29, at 10:30 am, women from the two branches of the Missisquoi County Women’s Institutes, the Dunham and the Fordyce branches, will be gathering outside Emmanuel United Church, 203 rue Principale, for a walk. The walk is held every year. It is called “Women Walk The World”. The Brome County Women are invited too, as are all citizens interested in supporting women and children around the world. It is a time to raise awareness and to raise donations for rural women in action.

Women in 83 countries around the world will be walking on this day to raise funds for two projects, “Food Waste” and “Planting Seeds of Peace”. Home economic professionals are working with ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) to look at simple actions that people can take in their own homes and in their communities to reduce food waste. The Quebec Women’s Institutes’ contribution to the Food Waste Project includes working on persuading restaurants in Quebec to offer senior portions as well as children-sized portion meals. Planting the Seeds of Peace aims to provide horticulture skills to the children of Ukrainian refugees in Romania. This therapeutic school-based gardening project will help children recover from the stress and trauma of war.

The Associated Country Women of the World was founded in 1929 and its work is strongly connected to the principles of human rights. The ACWW supports those left furthest behind through many projects.

Whether or not you are a member of a Women’s Institute, you are invited to join in on the walk on April 29. Funds will be collected that day to support the international project. For more information call Michilynn at 450-295-2252. To learn more about the Walk and the ACWW, or to make a donation online, go to acww.org. uk. The walk will last about half an hour.
