New initiative launched to promote physical activity across Quebec
The launch of the circonflexe prêt-pour-bouger project was celebrated at the Bedford Arena June 13, marking a significant milestone in promoting physical activity across Quebec. Isabelle Charest, Minister responsible for Sport, Leisure, and Outdoor Activities, joined numerous partners in highlighting the progress and partnerships driving this initiative.
The circonflexe - prêt-pour-bouger project aims to provide free access to sports and recreational equipment throughout Quebec, reducing barriers to participation in physical activities, according to a June 10 release.
This initiative, managed by the Réseau des Unités régionales de loisir et de sport (RURLS), involves the establishment of service points offering equipment loans to communities. These service points include loan counters, self-service connected lockers, and mobile units, making equipment more accessible to the public.
Over the next five years, the Quebec government will allocate over $40.7 million to support the project, with the goal of transforming the landscape of sports and recreational activities. This funding will enhance access to adapted sports equipment and promote a more active lifestyle among Quebecers.
Nearly 400 service points have already been established, with the involvement of over 500 partners from various sectors, including municipalities, community organizations, and regional parks.
Charest emphasized the importance of accessible sports and recreational activities in the release, stating, “Since taking office, I have prioritized the accessibility of sports and leisure activities. The availability and cost of equipment often pose significant barriers.”
“It is essential that everyone can access these activities. The implementation of the circonflexe equipment hubs is an innovative way to democratize access to sports, recreational, and adapted activities. I commend the dynamism of the RURLS and all the partners who have mobilized across the territory.”
