NII will explore other Saugeen Shores locations before widening search for a host community

Shoreline Beacon - - News -

The loud and sustained opposition from some southampton residents in opposition to locating ontario’s nuclear innovation institute (nii) in southampton did not take saugeen shores out of the running as a host community.

in a letter to saugeen shores council and shared with local press, Frank saunders, President of the nii thanked the town for its ongoing support.

he said nii would explore other locations in saugeen shores before expanding its search across bruce county.

“in order for the nii to be success, we need the support of the host community and we appreciate the strong messages we have received from the Town of saugeen shores, from its outgoing and incoming mayor, municipal council and many community members, in consideration of another location within saugeen shores,” saunders said in a nov. 23 press release.

nii abandoned the preferred location adjacent to the bruce county museum & cultural centre due to public debate that was a “distraction from this incredibly exciting opportunity” for the region saunders said.

he said the nii is looking forward to working with the Town to consider a future location in the municipality of saugeen shores. _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ ________________________________ _______________________________
