Norfolk County honoured businesses, developers and their construction teams this week for going above and beyond in 2018.

Norfolk’s annual Site Plan Awards is an occasion to recognize individuals who go that extra mile to improve the county with their investments.

Five projects were celebrated Thursday night at the Norfolk Arts Centre in Simcoe.

“To date in 2018 there have been 20 site-plan applications submitted,” Pam Duesling, Norfolk’s general manager of development and cultural services, said.

“The planning department organizes this event to celebrate the top five developments that go above and beyond in design, including parking, traffic, green space, lighting, buffering and so on. The Site Plan Awards allow Norfolk County an opportunity to celebrate the great developments that we are all so proud of. Congratulations to our Norfolk County developers on a job well done.”

The developments recognized include the three new stores under construction at the Walmart property in Simcoe, the RT Respiratory Services office in Simcoe, The Good Bread Company expansion in Vittoria, the expansion of Townsend Butchers on Fourteenth Street East in Simcoe, and the Ayanda Medical Marijuana facility on Burford-delhi Townline Road in the north end of the county.

Norfolk planning staff praised the sponsors of these developments and spoke briefly about what made them special.

Principal planner Shannon Vandalen cited the two new commercial centres at Walmart because of the effort Smart Centres – Walmart’s real estate division – has put into landscaping and attractive facades.

Vandalen said attention to detail is important for new developments that sit at a gateway entrance to a community. She described the retail centre taking shape at the intersection of Ireland Road as “the perfect gateway property.”

Principal planner Mat Vaughan praised the new RT Respiratory office on Park Road in Simcoe for its attractive appearance, abundant parking, and attention to detail. The latter includes the creation of an out-of-the-way storage area in back for snow plowed off the parking lot.

“It’s something we can look at as we pass by and be really proud of,” Vaughan said.

Senior planner Kayla Deleye said the Miedema family at Townsend Butchers was a picture of persistence as they battled through the municipal and provincial regulations that attend a major expansion of a meatpacking and processing facility.

“They’re smiling now,” Deleye said. “But they had a number of challenges to overcome when expanding an abattoir. But the end result is really fantastic. I went on a tour today and it is amazing.”

The Good Bread Company was praised for re-purposing a historic church in Vittoria into a bakery. Senior planner Alisha Cull told the crowd that the new and improved facility will open to the public shortly.

As for the Ayanda marijuana facility north of Delhi, planner Steve Collyer said the company nailed the layout and design. He added that the facility could serve as a template for any company wishing to venture into the new and emerging field of cannabis processing.
