Usually, and this is something that should be changed, away goals are still valuable if a tie goes to extra time. However, in the MLS playoffs, the away goal rule works differently. If after the 180 minutes the aggregate score is level, taking into consideration the away goals rule, the away goals tiebreaker no longer applies in the extra time period. Well, someone forgot to tell Portland Timbers about that as the players thought their game against Seattle was over since they had two away goals to Seattle’s one and initially celebrated a victory at the final whistle. Luckily for Portland, they went on to win in a penalty shootout to spare their blushes.
