MANCHESTER CITY 2011-12
“Aguerooooo!” The legendary commentary of Martin Tyler conjures up memories of Manchester City’s magnificent title win. On the cusp of their first ever Premier League title, City went into the final day of the season level on points with rivals Manchester United, but boasting a better goal difference. United recorded a routine 1-0 win against Sunderland but Roberto Mancini’s City struggled, going 2-1 down to Queens
Park Rangers despite having a man advantage.
Edin Dzeko equalised in the 92nd minute, but there was still time for Sergio Aguero to find a 94th minute winner and send fans into delirium.
MANCHESTER CITY HAVE BEEN A STEP AHEAD OF LIVERPOOL IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON. IF THE TITLE RACE GOES TO THE WIRE, IT WON’T BE THE FIRST TIME…
LEICESTER CITY 2015-16
The unlikeliest of Premier League winners. Less than a year before, Leicester City looked set for relegation, scraping a few late results together to ensure survival. With the appointment of Claudio Ranieri, additions such as unknown talent N’Golo Kante and form of top goal scorer Jamie Vardy, they began an ascent to the top that did not stop. The Foxes were top at Christmas and soon all challengers fell by the wayside with Tottenham closest.
In the end Leicester didn’t have to kick a ball to win the League. Players and fans watched the TV with glee as Spurs drew 2-2 with Chelsea to seal the biggest underdog story in sporting history with two games to spare.
BLACKBURN ROVERS 1994-95
After finishing fourth in 1992–93 and runners-up in 1993–94, 1995 was to be Blackburn Rovers’ year. They signed
Chris Sutton from Norwich City for an English record £5m to partner prodigious talent Alan Shearer, who scored 34 League goals that season.
The title race with Manchester United went down to the last day of the season with Alex Ferguson’s side playing West Ham and Rovers manager Kenny Dalglish returning to Anfield. He got no favours from the side he once played for, losing 2-1 thanks to a 90th minute Jamie Redknapp free-kick
All United had to was win, but they were held 1-1 at Upton Park to grant Blackburn their first League title in 81 years.
