Four ways you can help end plastic pollution

- CONTRIBUTED editor@southshorebreaker.ca

Plastics are everywhere, from the clothes we wear to the cars we drive and everything in between. Eliminating them entirely, at least for the foreseeable future, would likely be outright impossible. But there are a number of simple ways in which individuals can become a part of the solution to the world’s plastic problem.

Refuse

Single-use plastics are those that are used once and then discarded. Declining to use such products entirely is a good step toward helping end plastic pollution. You could:

• Use a refillable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.

• Use a portable coffee cup.

• Say no to straws.

• Carry your own cutlery so you don’t have to use the disposable kind.

• Buy vegetables that aren’t packaged in Styrofoam.

• Shop with reusable tote bags.

Reduce

Decrease your overall consumption of plastic products, especially those with excessive plastic packaging. Opt to:

• Buy from bulk bins.

• Use laundry soap packaged in cardboard.

• Buy razors with replaceable blades.

• Use bar cosmetic products instead of bottled or canned (shaving cream, shampoo, hand soap, etc.)

• Use a refillable pen.

• Buy clothes made of natural materials.

Reuse

There are countless ways to extend the lifespan of everyday plastic objects. Yogurt cups can be used as seedling starters, pop bottles can be transformed into scoops and grocery bags can be used to collect garbage.

Recycle

Whatever plastics you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse, you should recycle. These days, most types of plastic can be recycled. Check with your local recycling depot for specific guidelines.
