A GUIDE TO SOME OF ATLANTIC CANADA’S ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND­S

JEREMY CROSS MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND

For children in Newfoundla­nd, the new Jeremy Cross Memorial Playground offers structures and equipment for everyone.the most accessible and inclusive playground east of Montreal, kids of all abilities can visit and enjoy themselves. Located in Saint Johns, Newfoundla­nd at the Easter Seals House on Mount Scio Road, it was named for the late Jeremy Cross, a young man who lived with cerebral palsy.

The playground features picnic tables, roll on swing sets, seesaws, slides, a plaza, amphitheat­re, garden and a hardcourt surface so that wheelchair users are able to play on the equipment. Opened on June 14, 2018 the playground is available year round for locals and visitors alike.

GLEN STEWART SCHOOL

In PEI, there is a wonderfull­y diverse playground. Located at 34 Glen Stewart Drive in Stratford, PEI the playground is built on a wheelchair accessible surface and there is equipment that visually and hearing impaired children can play on. Part of the Boundless Playground project, all of the students at Glen Stewart School can enjoy themselves and stay safe.

Kids of all ages and abilities deserve to be able play and have fun. These playground­s offer them all the opportunit­y to.whether there are seesaws or swing sets or slides, these parks can be fun for everyone. Make sure to visit these parks and make the most of the summer sun.

WESTMOUNT INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND

In Atlantic Canada, there are plenty of children who adore playing at playground­s while their caregivers watch. However, most of these places used to unknowingl­y exclude some kids. Now, there are playground­s that offer inclusive equipment so that children of all abilities can play.

In Nova Scotia,the Westmount Inclusive Playground is open to all. With a waterpark to cool kids down in the summer and a cushioned floor for wheelchair users to move around, the park was the first inclusive playground in the Halifax Regional Municipali­ty.with a mobility challenge course, butterfly garden, tennis court and soccer field, the playground at 6700 Edward Arab Avenue in Halifax, Nova Scotia is fun for the whole family.

KIWANIS PLAY PARK

A fully inclusive play experience for children of all ages and abilities, the Kiwanis play park, located in New Brunswick in Saint John’s Rockwood Park has a rubber ground for accessibil­ity and ramps so that wheelchair­s can get around. The park also has a new addition, Hannah and Jack’s Sunshine Headquarte­rs, in memory of Hannah, Jack and Jason Porter.
