Seniors’ fitness program in the works for 902 Athletics
The owner and operator of a Bridgewater fitness centre has plans to implement a seniors’ fitness program in the new year that is dedicated to helping the older population stay healthy.
“The community as a whole on the South Shore is starting to grow and I think one thing that our community is missing is a full- on seniors’ program that is dedicated to helping the older population stay healthy, stay active, be better and get out and socialize with others who want to get in shape or stay healthy through their later years,” said Joel Holland, owner and operator of 902 Athletics.
“There’s so many people out there that could benefit from it.”
As it is now, Holland said a number of seniors participate in the regular programming offered at their 446 York St., Bridgewater location gym, but he wants to take it beyond that.
“We want to start up a specific senior program tailored to individuals looking to stay
stronger in their older years,” said Holland.
“It would be a coached class with one of our trainers on hand,” with exercises for strengthening, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, stamina and mobility co-ordination.
Holland said he is looking at offering the program on weekdays in a time slot between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., anticipating classes would be 45 minutes to an hour long.
Holland says it is not just seniors who are living healthier and staying more active these days.
“It’s everyone. You need to stay active in order to live longer and the benefits are next to none. Exercise is now being looked at (as) medication as compared to taking medication.”
