Se­niors’ fit­ness pro­gram in the works for 902 Ath­let­ics

The owner and op­er­a­tor of a Bridge­wa­ter fit­ness cen­tre has plans to im­ple­ment a se­niors’ fit­ness pro­gram in the new year that is ded­i­cated to help­ing the older pop­u­la­tion stay healthy.

“The com­mu­nity as a whole on the South Shore is start­ing to grow and I think one thing that our com­mu­nity is miss­ing is a full- on se­niors’ pro­gram that is ded­i­cated to help­ing the older pop­u­la­tion stay healthy, stay ac­tive, be bet­ter and get out and so­cial­ize with oth­ers who want to get in shape or stay healthy through their later years,” said Joel Hol­land, owner and op­er­a­tor of 902 Ath­let­ics.

“There’s so many peo­ple out there that could ben­e­fit from it.”

As it is now, Hol­land said a number of se­niors par­tic­i­pate in the reg­u­lar pro­gram­ming of­fered at their 446 York St., Bridge­wa­ter lo­ca­tion gym, but he wants to take it be­yond that.

“We want to start up a spe­cific se­nior pro­gram tai­lored to in­di­vid­u­als look­ing to stay

stronger in their older years,” said Hol­land.

“It would be a coached class with one of our trainers on hand,” with ex­er­cises for strength­en­ing, car­dio­vas­cu­lar en­durance, flex­i­bil­ity, stamina and mo­bil­ity co-or­di­na­tion.

Hol­land said he is look­ing at of­fer­ing the pro­gram on week­days in a time slot be­tween 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., an­tic­i­pat­ing classes would be 45 min­utes to an hour long.

Hol­land says it is not just se­niors who are liv­ing health­ier and stay­ing more ac­tive these days.

“It’s ev­ery­one. You need to stay ac­tive in or­der to live longer and the ben­e­fits are next to none. Ex­er­cise is now be­ing looked at (as) med­i­ca­tion as com­pared to tak­ing med­i­ca­tion.”
