Smart steps for social media security
As long as there is Facebook and social media in general, there will always be viruses. So, how do you protect yourself?
There is a way to check where your Facebook account has been logged into. The best thing to do is to log out of all locations and change your password. Here are the steps to do this:
1. On the Home page, click on the arrow in the top right-hand corner (next to the question mark symbol).
Go to Settings.
On the left-hand side, click on Security and Login.
4. This will show a list of all the places you are logged in. The locations of the logins should be around your area. The best thing to do is to log out of all locations. Before you do this, ensure you know your password. If you don’t remember your password, you can change your password by clicking on the “Change password” option on the same page. If you know your password, log out of all devices. You will need to log into Facebook on all of your devices again, such as your computer, tablet and/or phone. This will ensure you are the only one logged into your account.
To strengthen your security, you can use the “Use two-factor authentication” option on the same page. If there is an unusual login on your account or someone is trying to change your password, Facebook will send you a text to your phone with a code. The code has to be entered for them to gain access to your account. If they don’t have your phone, they can’t access your account.
For additional security, you can scroll further down the page and see “Get alerts about unrecognized logins.” Turn this on and Facebook will send you an alert of any unrecognized logins. Remember, if you buy a new device and log in, you will get an alert.
You can take your security a step further by providing friends to contact if you get locked out of Facebook. This is good if you don’t have a cell phone or if you a have a tech-savvy person in the family.
