“Embrace winter, enjoy the snow and celebrate this spectacular season with the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg!”

It’s our mission to get people of all ages outside and moving! Don’t hibernate — come out and enjoy the winter wonderland with us. It’s one of the best ways to keep a smile on your face, even during the darkest months. Put on your hat, scarf, and a cosy pair of mittens and come join in on the fun and adventures we have planned for you. Best of all, most activities are free!

It’s time to “take the roof off winter” and make memories skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, sledding or playing in the snow at the MARC (Municipal Activity and Recreation Complex) in Dayspring on Saturdays. We have free cross-country skis and snowshoes for everyone to use. Take a break and enjoy some hot chocolate, served up by our staff. When conditions allow, we’ll be organizing surprise pop-up activities, including a snow-sculpture contest. Join us every Saturday ( January 19 through February 23, 2019) from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m.

Campfires aren’t just for the summer months! On Jan. 19 (2 p.m. to 3 p.m.) and Jan. 26 (11 a.m. to 12 p.m.) at the MARC, Sam Wentzell of Sam’s Woodland Tours will demonstrate how to start a fire using a bow drill. Then we’ll roast some yummy bannock on a stick (camping bread) and enjoy hot chocolate made on a “Canadian Candle” – one of the most efficient ways to create a contained campfire. There will also be popcorn and roasted marshmallows, mmm!

On Feb. and Feb. 9, join us at Maplewood Maple Syrup & Christmas Tree Farm for free wagon rides at noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tour the 350-acre farm, rooted in Canadian tradition, and explore more than 3,400 maple taps. Stop by the sugar shack to sample maple syrup taffy and other treats, sip on some hot chocolate by the campfire and learn how the Veinot family keeps the land healthy. Register early by calling (902) 541-1343, as this will surely fill up quickly.

Don’t miss the 2nd Miller Point Peace Park Giant Tiger Photo Contest! Photos can be entered from Jan. 1 through Nov. 4, 2019. Get out your cameras and capture a special moment at

Miller Point Peace Park. There’s nothing like trees dusted in snow. Choose a category and get started! Full contest rules available at www.modl.ca/recreation.

Have you always wanted to learn how to cross-country ski? Learn the basics with Jill Swaine at the MARC. All equipment provided. Pre-registration is required. The adults lesson takes place Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m., and the families lesson (ages 9+) runs Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m.
