Elizabeth Cromwell invested into Order of Canada
Hearts are swelling with pride in Shelburne County with the investiture into the Order of Canada for Elizabeth Cromwell C.M. at Rideau Hall on Nov. 20 by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.
“With a strong vision and tireless determination, Elizabeth Cromwell has dedicated herself to the preservation and dissemination of Black history in Nova Scotia,” reads her citation. “Recognized as humble and passionate, she has been involved with various cultural and heritage organizations in the province, notably as a founding member and president of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society. She was instrumental in establishing the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre, a museum housing artifacts, stories and the collective history of Black Loyalists in Canada.”
Cromwell’s appointment to the Order of Canada as a member (C.M.) was made on Dec. 29, 2017. The Order of Canada is one of Canada’s highest honours. Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Close to 7,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
Cromwell, a founding member of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society (BLHS), has also been recognized with an honorary degree from Dalhousie University Doctor of Laws (honoris causa).
