Join in the fun: free indoor walking club
We know you don’t want to walk on slippery sidewalks through the slush and ice — and it’s getting pretty cold outside — so Bridgewater Parks, Recreation and Culture is offering a free Let’s Get Moving Indoor Walking Club for all this winter.
The weekly walks will take place on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Jan. 7 through March 25 (with no scheduled walks on Feb. 18 or March 18) at the HB Studio Sports Centre’s indoor track (543 Glen Allan Dr. in Bridgewater).
Coordinator Karen Selig has been leading walks over the past 10 years as a Heart and Stroke Walkabout Leader and Recreation specialist. The Indoor Walking Club on Monday evenings is free for all age groups. Selig says participants will also have use of the adult trike, if anyone with mobility issues wants to give it a try.
Special guests will also dropping by to walk with everyone on the following dates:
Jan. 7: Cleve’s Source for Sports will join the group to answer questions about choosing the right sneakers for your feet.
Jan. 14: Hailey Ewing, a dietitian with the Bridgewater Superstore, will be there to answer any questions regarding foods — including what to eat to fight the flu.
Jan. 28: Thinking about going south, Europe, or Australia? Adrienne Benoit, senior travel agent with Maritime Travel will answer your questions.
Feb. 25 and March 4: A doctor will join the group to chat about healthy living.
The provincial government’s new “Let’s Get Moving Action Plan” states “We want to help Nova Scotians be more active in their everyday lives. We will do this by improving and increasing opportunities for them to be active in their communities, workplaces, and schools. In the end, we hope to create a culture where daily movement is the new normal for Nova Scotians of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.”
The HB Studio Sports Centre’s indoor track has a biomechanical design to provide a comfortable and consistent surface for walkers and runners. Anyone interested in walking at HB Studio Sports Centre on a regular basis should check in with them regarding fees per use and monthly passes which can be purchased.
Selig says not only is the Indoor Walking Club a great chance to escape the cold wintery weather — it’s also a chance to get some exercise and meet some new people.
“Walking each week is a great social activity for all ages. We are so fortunate to have access to this four-lane, 209-metre oval indoor track,” says Selig. “We really want to see people come to the track this winter to enjoy some great physical activity and stay warm.”
Shirley Carver regularly participated in past walking clubs and says “It is so nice to have a social hour and get your exercise.”
