Join in the fun: free in­door walk­ing club

We know you don’t want to walk on slip­pery side­walks through the slush and ice — and it’s get­ting pretty cold out­side — so Bridge­wa­ter Parks, Recre­ation and Cul­ture is of­fer­ing a free Let’s Get Mov­ing In­door Walk­ing Club for all this win­ter.

The weekly walks will take place on Mon­day evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Jan. 7 through March 25 (with no sched­uled walks on Feb. 18 or March 18) at the HB Stu­dio Sports Cen­tre’s in­door track (543 Glen Al­lan Dr. in Bridge­wa­ter).

Co­or­di­na­tor Karen Selig has been lead­ing walks over the past 10 years as a Heart and Stroke Walk­a­bout Leader and Recre­ation spe­cial­ist. The In­door Walk­ing Club on Mon­day evenings is free for all age groups. Selig says par­tic­i­pants will also have use of the adult trike, if any­one with mo­bil­ity is­sues wants to give it a try.

Spe­cial guests will also drop­ping by to walk with ev­ery­one on the fol­low­ing dates:

Jan. 7: Cleve’s Source for Sports will join the group to an­swer ques­tions about choos­ing the right sneak­ers for your feet.

Jan. 14: Hai­ley Ewing, a di­eti­tian with the Bridge­wa­ter Su­per­store, will be there to an­swer any ques­tions re­gard­ing foods — in­clud­ing what to eat to fight the flu.

Jan. 28: Think­ing about go­ing south, Europe, or Aus­tralia? Adri­enne Benoit, se­nior travel agent with Mar­itime Travel will an­swer your ques­tions.

Feb. 25 and March 4: A doc­tor will join the group to chat about healthy liv­ing.

The provin­cial govern­ment’s new “Let’s Get Mov­ing Ac­tion Plan” states “We want to help Nova Sco­tians be more ac­tive in their ev­ery­day lives. We will do this by im­prov­ing and in­creas­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties for them to be ac­tive in their com­mu­ni­ties, work­places, and schools. In the end, we hope to cre­ate a cul­ture where daily move­ment is the new nor­mal for Nova Sco­tians of all ages, abil­i­ties, and back­grounds.”

The HB Stu­dio Sports Cen­tre’s in­door track has a biome­chan­i­cal de­sign to pro­vide a com­fort­able and con­sis­tent sur­face for walk­ers and run­ners. Any­one in­ter­ested in walk­ing at HB Stu­dio Sports Cen­tre on a reg­u­lar ba­sis should check in with them re­gard­ing fees per use and monthly passes which can be pur­chased.

Selig says not only is the In­door Walk­ing Club a great chance to es­cape the cold win­tery weather — it’s also a chance to get some ex­er­cise and meet some new peo­ple.

“Walk­ing each week is a great so­cial ac­tiv­ity for all ages. We are so for­tu­nate to have ac­cess to this four-lane, 209-me­tre oval in­door track,” says Selig. “We re­ally want to see peo­ple come to the track this win­ter to en­joy some great phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity and stay warm.”

Shirley Carver reg­u­larly par­tic­i­pated in past walk­ing clubs and says “It is so nice to have a so­cial hour and get your ex­er­cise.”
