- VERNON OICKLE

Canada’s National Women’s Hockey Team will kick off the 2019-20 season on the East Coast next month when it heads to Liverpool for the annual BFL National Women’s Team Fall Festival.

A training camp aimed at helping develop and evaluate the nation’s top female players is presented by Sobeys and is set for September 9-15 at the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.

The camp will see players split into two teams — Red and White — for a series of on- and off-ice sessions, including two intra-squad games and two match-ups against local junior hockey clubs over their sevenday stay on the South Shore.

David Dagley, mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality, said during an announcement event on August 14 that council and residents of the region are thrilled that Hockey Canada and Canada’s National Women’s Team have selected Queens Place Emera Centre to host the annual Fall Festival.

“Hockey fans in the region and across Nova Scotia are excited for the opportunity to watch the top female hockey players in the country and we look forward to attending the games as the team prepares for the upcoming season,” Dagley added.

Ryan Robins, director of events and properties for Hockey Canada, said they are excited to bring Canada’s National Women’s Team to the community of Liverpool for seven days of highly-competitive games and practices, and to provide young hockey fans the chance to watch their role models at an affordable price.

“This camp will provide fans in Liverpool and surrounding communities the opportunity to watch the top female players in Canada as they begin training for the road to the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship

in Nova Scotia next spring,” Robins said.

Amy Walsh, executive director of Hockey Nova Scotia, said the organization continues to focus on the growth and development of the game, and providing opportunities for young girls to play hockey.

“We are thrilled that the Canada’s National Women’s Team is coming to Nova Scotia as we believe this is just one of the many initiatives in the 2019-20 season that will help put female hockey in Nova Scotia in a great place moving forward,” she added.

The roster for the BFL National Women’s Team Fall Festival, presented by Sobeys, will be announced in the coming weeks, but fans can reserve their spot to watch Team Canada by purchasing a ticket package for $20 plus fees and taxes at Ticketpro.ca or the Queens Place Emera Centre box office. The package includes one ticket to each of the four games, which run from September 11-14. All practices are free and open for the public to attend.

Halifax and Truro will host the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship from March 31 to April 10. Canada’s National Women’s Team will look to capture its first world championship gold medal since 2012, and first on home ice since 2007 in Winnipeg and Selkirk, Manitoba.

Canada’s National Women’s Team has won 10 gold medals at the IIHF Women’s World Championship, in addition to eight silver medals and one bronze.
