Making his military dream come true
When Justin Buckmaster graduated from New Germany Rural High School, he knew he would do whatever he could to work with people and help his local area.
Buckmaster said as a young boy he was always impressed with the military and felt that maybe someday he might be able to become a part of the elite group.
After working part time in a local restaurant, the 18-year-old made the decision - it was now or never to talk to a recruiter with the local RCAF Reserve Unit in Bridgewater.
Once he discovered how many opportunities there were for young people who want to serve both their country and community, he jumped at the chance and submitted his application.
The opportunities that were presented amazed Buckmaster with trades like plumbing, electrical and carpentry, just to mention a few.
After looking at the options, he settled on MSE Op (mobile support equipment operator) and will receive training to operate military vehicles of all sizes.
Since taking his oath in late January, Buckmaster has been overwhelmed with the support and guidance he has received from members of
143 Construction Engineering Flight, where he will be working when his training concludes. Training will consist of a 10-week basic military qualification course in Aldershot, where he will be immersed in the military lifestyle and importance of working as a team. When this concludes, he will receive training specific to his chosen trade at CFB Borden for about 11 weeks and then he will be ready to roll.
To say that Buckmaster is excited would be an understatement and once fitted for his uniform he will spend time at the flight, preparing both physically and mentally for his basic training.
As he has said, his dream as a young boy has become a reality.
He also believes if more young people in the area knew about the opportunities, they would follow his footsteps.
