As temperatures start to rise, and my boys’ hockey schedules start to slow down, I turn my attention to my home. After a busy winter, many homes (like mine) are ready for a good spring cleaning and a bit of a décor refresh.

Of course, spring is the perfect time to declutter, organize and clean. I like to make lists of all the projects to be completed and concentrate on one room at a time so I don’t get overwhelmed. Clean out drawers, pack away clothes that are too small or out of season and get rid of toys and other items that are no longer being used. Make sure kids get involved in the process too. Many hands make light work.

After all the de-cluttering and purging is completed, it’s time for a good cleaning and a bit of decorating. You’ll be amazed by how fantastic your home will look with a bit of paint, the completion of some simple repairs and the additions of a few new seasonal decorations.

Consider adding some new linens and throw pillows, bringing in natural elements with greenery and florals and Diying a couple of spring décor projects. A front door wreath is a wonderful place to start. One of my favourite simple spring DIYS is to purchase a colourful small umbrella from the dollar store.

Then, using the upsidedown umbrella as a vase, I insert a variety of artificial spring florals and secure the flowers in place with a ribbon tied into a bow. Then, the handle can be used to hang the flower-filled umbrella. It doesn’t get much easier than this little whimsical craft.

If an umbrella wreath doesn’t fit your style, try creating something more traditional. Start with an inexpensive wire wreath form, wrap it in twine or yarn, use hot glue to attach a variety of seasonal florals and add a bow. You can get creative and have some fun creating something unique and budget friendly.

Adding some spring florals is another way to brighten up your home this time of year. You can gather some pussy willows from your yard or you can use real or artificial flowers in a simple vase. I found some gorgeous pink apple blossoms and a rustic milk jug vase at my local dollar store and they look great together. I also added a bit of twine and some wooden beads to my vase to make it look more high-end.

Decorating a tiered tray is another fantastic way to add a seasonal flair, and if you don’t have one, it’s easy to make your own. Grab a large plate, a small plate and a candlestick holder. Paint the candle stick holder a colour that matches the plates and use hot glue to attach the small plate to the top of the candle stick holder and the large plate to the bottom of the candlestick holder.

A decorative tiered tray can be used for serving food, but you can also create a vignette by adding a painted birdhouse, a strand of wooden beads and some greenery and florals.

The lazy days of summer are just around the corner, so now is the ideal time to invest a little time refreshing your home. De-clutter, organize, clean and grab some supplies to craft a few DIY décor items. Happy spring!
