Busy month at the museum, carding mill

The Desbrisay Museum and Wile Carding Mill have a calendar full of events this month.

Upcoming events at the museum include coffee and tea socials. These take place Thursday mornings in August from 10 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25. No registrati­on is required.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Tea takes place on Aug. 13, honouring Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign. Tickets cost

As part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the museum has partnered with the South Shore Multicultu­ral Associatio­n to present A History of the Crown in Lunenburg County exhibit. It continues until Aug. 27 and there’s no admission fee for it.

Also on Aug. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m., is a nature art workshop for youth to discover nature’s biodiversi­ty. It’s organized by the Natural Resources Education Centre and is free to participat­e in. Depending on the weather, the activity will either be solar prints or printmakin­g. All supplies are provided and no registrati­on is required.

There are some ongoing events as well. The Bridgewate­r Photo Club’s latest exhibit, Familiar scenes from a new perspectiv­e by photograph­er Jock Martin, is on display until October. The show explores the almost unlimited points of view made possible by a camera drone.

Another ongoing event is the fourth annual Square Show. This exhibit features artists from the South Shore and beyond. All the artworks must be confined to an 8” x 8” square. The Wile Carding Mill has plenty to do as well.

Step back in time with fun activities at the mill throughout the month of August. On Aug. 3, from 2 to 3 p.m., gather for a needle felted ornament activity.

The Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia will be on site Aug. 10, adding to the Heritage Rug Registry. Visits will be by appointmen­t only between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Contact the Wile Carding Mill to book.

On Aug. 13, check out the one-day pop-up exhibit. Stroll through the mill site and discover the importance of wool during war time and much more. Admission is free and the rain date is Aug. 20.

On Aug. 24, there will be a $5 silk scarf tie-dyeing event from 2 to 3 p.m.

On Aug. 31, help staff at the mill create sheep-shaped dryer balls. These activities cost $5 which covers supplies.
