Acadia University Singers to perform in Lunenburg
On Friday, Dec. 2, the Acadia University Singers will a present a concert titled Sing, My Child!: Songs of Hope, Peace, Love & Joy at St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg.
Inspired by the Advent practice of lighting four candles symbolizing hope, peace, love and joy, this concert will feature uplifting choral music — ranging from reflective Renaissance polyphony to lively traditional folk music — centered on those four themes. This diverse and multicultural program will bring together music celebrating Advent, Christmas, the Winter Solstice and more, and will challenge the choir to sing in five different languages (English, Latin, Malaysian, Yoruba, and Zulu).
One of the program highlights will be a performance of Singkap Siaga, a captivating new work by Malaysiancanadian choral composer Tracy Wong. Based on the ancient Malaysian
shadow puppet theatre practice of Wayang Kulit Kelantan, this spirited piece incorporates body percussion and will be as exciting to watch as it is to sing. The program will also include Tomas Luis de Victoria’s O Magnum Mysterium, Earlene Rentz’s arrangement of the Ukrainian folk melody Sleigh Bells, Canadian composer Sarah Quartel’s Sing, My Child and more.
The Acadia University Singers are a 20-voice chamber choir comprised of music students from the Acadia School of Music’s bachelor of music and bachelor of music therapy programs as well as alumni and community members. Their director, musicology instructor Michelle Keddy Boyd (originally from Lunenburg County), is also an Acadia graduate.
After two years of remaining on campus, the Acadia University Singers are delighted to have the opportunity to travel to Lunenburg to perform.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. Admission is by freewill donation at the door.
