Lunenburg Heritage House Tour coming in September
The Lunenburg Heritage Society is inviting the public behind the doors of six homes that have been lovingly restored and are being graciously shared by their owners.
From Georgian and Cape to Victorian and Industrial, explore three centuries of unique architecture and learn about the generations who built, reimagined and lived in these homes.
Step into a traditional Cape on the road where tanneries were established in 1754. Tour Solomon House, a quintessential 1775 Georgian home complete with coffin window. Count the eight fireplaces in the 1841 Kaulbach-oxner House and then climb to the top of Tower House, where Captain Mason kept an eye on his ships. See an industrial space transformed to modern flat in the Block Shop and imagine convalescing with a view of the harbour in the Old Lunenburg
Marine Hospital, now a private residence with lovely gardens.
The tour includes more than homes — there are 21 locations altogether.
See traditional skills in practice at iconic working spaces: The Dory
Shop, Big Boat Shed and The Sail Loft; fishing company Adams & Knickle, operating since 1897; and Ironworks
Distillery, where craft rum is “ocean aged” by harbour currents in a boat called Black Beauty. Nearby is B2 Lofts and the offices of Mackay-lyons Sweetapple Architects, an award-winning building designed alongside the original 1873 commercial structure.
Follow the sound of bells to five places of worship, their inspiring sanctuaries built by local carpenters and boatbuilders. Sit in the 1908 Lunenburg Opera House, former music hall and cinema, now home to Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society. Climb to the castle on the hill, as generations of students did for 117 years, and explore the Lunenburg Academy Heritage Classroom.
The volunteer-run Lunenburg Heritage Society is committed to preserving and promoting the town’s stories and built heritage. Proceeds from the Lunenburg Heritage House Tour will support renewal and conservation of the Knaut-rhuland House Museum.
Tickets are $25 in advance, available at lunenburgheritagesociety.ca or at the Knaut-rhuland House Museum, 125 Pelham Street, 902-634-3498. Tickets are $30 on the day of the tour, Saturday, Sept. 9, at the tour starting locations, The Lunenburg Academy, 97 Kaulback St., or Ironworks Distillery, 2 Kempt St.).
