Celebrating Canadian Children’s Book Week
Canadian Children's Book Week, April 28 to May 4, is to encourage families to read books by Canadian authors and illustrators. Participate by checking out a book or two from the list below. The library booklist provides readers with names of books and other material recommended by the staff of Western Counties Regional Library. All recommendations are posted at www.westerncounties.ca under Recommended Reading with links to our catalogue.
CITY OF WATER by Andrea Curtis
This narrative nonfiction book explores the water system as it affects cities. The narrative tracks our water from its source, moving through pipes and treatment facilities into our taps and fire hydrants, our pools and toilets, then out through storm and sewer systems. It takes a fun, engaged approach that emphasizes the experience of kids and how they relate to water.
BLANKET by Ruth Ohi
Ruth Ohi's first wordless picture book is a quiet, heartfelt story about those times when you just want to hide under a blanket — and how much it can mean to have a friend who will be there to keep you company.
MY HEART BEATS by Rina Singh
This photographic board book features the sounds of heartbeats from around the world.
ALIS THE AVIATOR by Danielle Metcalfe-chenail
An A to Z of planes past and present, this book has stunning cut-paper art and a cute-as-a-button guide named Alis. Named for Dr. Alis Kennedy, likely one of the first Indigenous women to obtain a commercial pilot licence in Canada, Alis will take you on an aviation tour from the Avro Arrow to the Zeppelin and everything in between.
MALAIKA, CARNIVAL QUEEN by Nadia L. Hohn
Nadia L. Hohn and Irene Luxbacher have created another compelling story about Malaika, who finds a way to cope with her sadness about her father through their shared love of carnival.
JUST LIKE GRANDMA by Kim Rogers
Becca loves spending time with Grandma. Every time Becca says, “Let me try,” Grandma shows her how to make something beautiful.
