Pair help Team Canada past USA

Kyle’s Baylee Gil­lan­ders and Wise­ton’s Shelby Nis­bet both helped Canada’s Na­tional Women’s Un­der-18 team to a 2-1 se­ries win over the United States last week in Cal­gary.

Gil­lan­ders, a for­mer Swift Cur­rent Di­a­mond En­ergy AAA Midget Wild­cat, will suit up at the Warner Hockey School this sea­son af­ter three stand­out sea­sons with the Wild­cats.

Last sea­son Gil­lan­ders fin­ished third in points among SFMAAAHL de­fense man with 19 in only 22 games and was named the Top De­fense­man at the Mac’s World In­vi­ta­tional tour­na­ment while help­ing the Wild­cats to their sec­ond con­sec­u­tive tour­na­ment ti­tle.

Nis­bet fin­ished third in league scor­ing last sea­son with 30 points in 28 games and was named a First Team All-Star at the Mac’s as well.

Canada opened the se­ries with a 4-3 loss but re­bounded for 4-2 and 3-1 wins.

The sum­mer team is also a step­ping stone to the ros­ter for the U-18 Na­tional Team for the 2010 IIHF World Women’s Un­der-18 Cham­pi­onship from March 27- April 3 to be held in the United States.
