Wiebe cap­tures CIS Cross Coun­try bronze medal

Swift Cur­rent’s Kelly Wiebe col­lected a bronze medal at the 2010 CIS Cross Coun­try Cham­pi­onship in Sherbrooke, Que. on Satur­day.

The fourth year Uni­ver­sity of Regina cross coun­try run­ner fin­ished the 10 kilo­me­ter course in 32 min­utes and 15 sec­onds, plac­ing sec­onds be­hind a pair of run­ners from Guelph Uni­ver­sity. Kyle Boorsma won the CIS cham­pi­onship in 31 min­utes and 53 sec­onds, with Alex Gen­est earn­ing the sil­ver medal in 32:07. Wiebe legged out a top three fin­ish to pre­vent a Guelph medal sweep, as he placed just eight sec­onds ahead of fourth place fin­isher Al­lan brett.

Wiebe was named the Canada West Run­ner of the Year for the sec­ond con­sec­u­tive sea­son af­ter his stand­out sea­son, and he also earned dis­tinc­tion as a CIS First-Team All-Cana­dian plus a Canada West First­Team All-Star nod.

The Cougars fin­ished sev­enth in the CIS team stand­ings and third in the con­fer­ence as a re­sult of hav­ing five run­ners fin­ish in the top 90 of the 139 run­ner field.

Dale Wig from Eas­t­end was 42nd in a time of 34 min­utes and 21 sec­onds, cross­ing the fin­ish line one sec­ond ahead of a pair of run­ners while plac­ing in the top third of the field. The fifth-year Cougars cross coun­try run­ner wrapped up an ac­com­plish­ment laden uni­ver­sity run­ning ca­reer.

Wig was a 2009-2010 Aca­demic All-Cana­dian. He was se­lected as a 2009 Canada West First-Team All-Star af­ter plac­ing a ca­reer best 21st at the 2009 CIS Cham­pi­onship.

He was also se­lected as a 2008 Canada West Sec­ondTeam All-Star. He also earned a 2006-2007 Aca­demic All-Cana­dian dis­tinc­tion.
