Tourney Champs

The Shaunavon Silhouettes ran their way to top spot at the eight-team SCCHS Senior Ardens basketball tournament on the weekend …

Shaunavon Silhouettes’ head coach Mark Benesh is hoping that a tournament title at the 2011 SCCHS Senior Girls Basketball Tournament in Swift Current on Saturday can be a stepping stone for a return trip to Hoopla this season.

The Silhouettes were the class of the seven-team tournament, wrapping up the title with a gritty 71-62 win over an aggressive Notre Dame Hounds squad in Saturday evening’s championship final.

“They are a good team and they pressured us all game long,” said head coach Mark Benesh. “They tried to tire us out, which they did a good job of. We just fought through and kept making plays. The girls worked really hard and they deserved the win.”

Jaime Rhodes was on top of her game in the championship final, finishing with 22 points and eight assists. Sierra Benesh had 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists and was key in breaking the Hounds pressure despite being physically harassed throughout the contest.

Morgan Gronhovd had a double-double with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals, while Jordan Nixon added 13 points, 14 rebounds, and three steals as she overcame illness in the final. Sara Illerbrun also played a major defensive role, helping to stop the Notre Dame break and nullifying their three-point shooting.

The Silhouettes advanced to the final with a 67-42 win over the host Ardens in the semi-final led by 19 points and nine rebounds from Benesh on three of three shooting from behind the three-point arc. Rhodes added 18 points on nine of 12 shooting and added seven assists. Gronhovd had another double-double with 17 points and 11 assists.

The Silhouettes opened the tournament with a 69-37 win over Weyburn on Friday. Benesh paced the offense with 20 points and five rebounds, followed by 14 points and two steals from Rhodes. Nixon added 10 points and six rebounds, Gronhovd chipped in eight points and 12 rebounds, Illerbrun had six points and four steals, and Kaelyn Oberle had six points and two assists.

The Silhouettes won a 3A provincial gold medal at Hoopla in Moose Jaw in 2006 but haven’t been back to the big dance since.

“We want to get to Hoopla and we think that we have a chance of doing that. Beating Notre Dame, who is a good 3A team, just tells us that that is realistic. We have to keep playing, the girls have to keep working hard, and we have to get in better shape because we were tired,” said Benesh.

It was a good weekend for Shaunavon basketball teams as the senior boys also won a tournament in Biggar, capped off with a 60-30 win over Middle Lake. Matthew Benesh led the with 30 points.
