Swift Current year end construction numbers look good

The Southwest Booster - - NEWS -

The City of Swift Current is celebrating the positive impact of their recently released building permit figures for the 2010 construction year.

Considering the construction year was challenging in terms of the wet weather conditions, more than $20 million in building permits were issued in 2010 which is a strong indicator of the economy in Swift Current.

“These figures really do show that there is a lot of activity occurring in our city. Although lower than the $28 million issued in 2009, the good news is that the value of residential permits continues to be strong. In fact, we have had in excess $14.3 million of construction on the residential side representing 62 single and multi family residential units. This represents an increase of 27 per cent over the total units built in 2009. This bodes well as the demand for housing has been high and with the number of residential lots sold this summer, we expect that there will continue to be many more residential building permits issued,” says Director of Business Development Marty Salberg.

Significant residential developments in 2011 will continue in the Highland Subdivision, Valley Ridge Subdivision behind the hospital, Sweet Water Estates on the former hospital site and along South Railway Street East.

On the commercial and industrial side, the city realized an increase of 44 per cent in the value of building permits issued over 2009, with government and institutional permits decreasing from $11 million to $1.7 million.

“We continue to receive a lot of interest from businesses wishing to expand and new businesses looking to locate in our city.

The services in the Munroe Industrial Park were completed and we anticipate with the oil sector gaining momentum, we could see more development in this area. All indications show that 2011 and 2012 will be great years for growth within our business community,” Salberg added.

Over the last six years, the total value of building permits issued in the City of Swift Current amounts to $220 million representing close to 500 single family, multi family and condo units. This speaks volumes in terms of the growth and excitement that has been occurring in Swift Current.
