11 SCCHS wrestlers headed to Provincials
The Swift Current Comprehensive High School was the host of the 2011 Regional Wrestling Championship on Saturday with 200 wrestlers from high schools around the province in Swift Current to try and capture a spot at the Provincial Championships in Saskatoon this weekend.
The Ardens placed first in the team standings and captured the Regional Title. The Colts place fifth in overall team points.
Eleven athletes from the host Colts and Ardens were able to place in the top four of their weight division and qualify for provincials.
Gold medals were claimed by Cam Hymers and Erin Hilts.
Second place finishes were earned by Natasha Cleavely, Vicki Burkey, Brady Hymers, and Brittany Morgan.
Colton Nelson, Carlene James, Jessica Wiens, and Lindsay Morgan all battled their way to third place showings.
Tyson Gaetz was also able to advance to provincials with a fourth place finish.
Coach Allen Blanke noted a standout performance from Cam Hymers, who wrestled well throughout tournament, especially in the hardfought gold medal match.
Blanke said Hymers used his technique and patience to wait for an opening on a shoulder throw to eventually pin his opponent.
