The Swift Current Foresters United Soccer Club under14 girls were in Saskatoon at the Eastside Grevers Tournament over the weekend were they hoped to improve upon a silver medal showing at their only previous tournament outing.

The U14 girls opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Lakewood Storm in a game that was played indoors on a smaller pitch with only five players on the field at a time. Jade Addai, Santana Gowan, and Jordan Jacobson all scored in the win.

A lackluster start left the United girls with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Prince Albert Celtic in their second game of the day.

Later that afternoon, they failed to capitalize on their many scoring chances and settled for a 1-1 draw against Saskatoon’s Hollandia UK Elite. Centre halfback Kirstie Klevgaard scored her first goal of the season midway through the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit.

The 1-1-1 record left the U14 girls in a three-way tie for third place in the round robin to earn a place in the bronze medal game.

Sunday, the United girls were unable to find the back of the net once again as the Hollandia Tigers scored a pair of late goals to send the visitors home without a medal.

The disappointing weekend left the coaching staff with more questions than answers as the team reaches the midway point of its season.

“This group has turned into an enigma to the coaches. Although it is very young, it has quite a bit of talent. Through the course of this tournament we created enough quality scoring opportunities to win each game but failed to find the back of the net. Defensively we play very well yet we seem to pay each time we make a mistake. If we can reverse those situations we will be extremely competitive come provincials,” said head coach Dale Perry.

Next action for the U14 girls will be July 1-3 at ACFC Summerfest in Regina where they will be competing in the U16 age category.
