RM of Swift Current unfairly labelled at All Candidates Forum

- Graham Ratzlaff - R.M. of Swift Current resident

To the editor: I would like to comment on the issue of the relationship between RM #137 and City Council which was discussed at the All Candidates Forum held on Oct. 10.

First of all I have to ask the question: What is the RM Council guilty of in the demise of the relationship between the two councils?

What aggressive act have they committed to deserve any guilt in this thing? Do the comments made about regional government suggest a larger agenda by the City Council?

I have asked some RM Councillors and I have combed the news archives, but I cannot find the evidence to support the fact that the RM Council is an aggressive or even uncooperative group.

I have found evidence that shows RM Council is unwilling to compromise the values of their ratepayers in the area of rural land annexation. In my estimation the relationship between the two councils is similar to the relationship between a young woman and her suitor. The young lady would prefer a relationship based on trust and respect; however the suitor is in it for different reasons. When the relationship falls apart the blame is placed on the young lady’s shoulders.

I believe that a step in the right direction would be for the City Council to apologize for their arrogant act of imposing user fees on the rural people and to remove it completely from the table. With that issue still on the table I find it difficult to believe there could be any bargaining in good faith.

Finally, I would like to make one suggestion to both sides. If you are really interested in a healthy relationship there is a book that has been out for quite some time that has some very good tips.
