It isn’t often that a performer has a chance to go from the Swift Current and District Music Festival stage to off Broadway, but Tim Lenko has made that jump.

Lenko, who is at the end of an internship at Millar College of the Bible, is currently serving as Music Director for a Millar College production which will be performed four times at a theatre in Manhattan. But before flying to New York earlier this week, the talented singer earned a pair of recommendations from the Swift Current and District Music Festival to compete at the 2013 Saskatchewan Music Festival Association Provincial Finals in Saskatoon on May 31 to June 2.

While Lenko has a schedule full of performance opportunities in the coming months, he felt his opportunity to perform at Sunday’s 2013 Extravaganza and Awards Ceremony was important as an example for young singers musicians.

“Looking out there into that group and seeing the potential out there, it’s astounding. It’s exciting to see what they are capable of now, and what they could potentially do in the future.”

“One of the things that I do want to do with my life is to set a good example. That’s something that my time at bible school, studying scripture, has powerfully shown, with those teachers that I’ve worked with, the examples that they have shown, reading in the scriptures about how Jesus came and set such an example, and then gave us the charge to set examples.”

“In my position, if I can set a good example for any of these kids that are watching, that’s a victory.

A full list of award winners from the 2013 Swift Current and District Music Festival will appear in next week’s Booster, but on Sunday it was announced that Austin Castle, Presley Reddekopp, Brennan Schommer, Hannah Derksen and the SCCHS Chamber Singers had all earned recommendations to provincials.

Lenko is in the midst of a rigorous tour schedule at the close of the Millar College year. He just completed a two-week tour across the prairie provinces along with 14 students and three teachers to deliver the choral and musical drama His Eye in on The Sparrow to communities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. He has also completed Canada wide tour with a drama/music team called Tim Lenko earned a pair of recommendations to compete at the 2013 Saskatchewan Music Festival Association Provincial Finals in Saskatoon. Millar College is now preparing to take the stage at The Players Theatre on MacDougal Street in Manhattan for a production of When We Came West, with shows running from May 9 to 11. Lenko is the music director for this short run production.

He was also in New York City when Millar College presented Drumbeats: A Story of Love and Courage in the Congo back in January 2011 at Players Theatre.

“I’m kind of blown away that my two trips to New York both include some offBroadway performances.”
