Golden debut for club basketball team

The newly formed Swift Current U15 Girls Club Basketball Team traveled to Saskatoon April 26-28 to compete in the Saskatoon Slam Tournament.

After only four practices together the girls took on the Battle River team as their first competitio­n and won by a score of 58-26.

Top scorers for Swift Current were Jade Addai with 20 points and Kyla Bolton with 10 points.

Saturday’s first game against Melfort gave the team their first loss 48-39. Addai was the leading scorer with 24 points and Bolton added six points.

The team played a second game Saturday against Yorkton.

Despite being

down 21-18 at halftime the girls battled to a 48-47 win. Addai once again led the team with a total of 18 points.

Ally McCann, Shae Barber, and Katie Braun scored six points each.

The team’s record in the round robin set them up for a rematch against Melfort for the gold medal game in their division on Sunday.

Swift Current led 15-10 at halftime and went on to a 38-37 win to win gold. Addai finished a fantastic weekend with 21 points in the championsh­ip game. Cassidy Petkau and Larissa Markewich each had four points.

Next tournament action for the U15 Girls will be May 24-25 in Medicine Hat at the Ranger May Madness Tournament.
