Midget Indians remain .500 in SPBL
The Swift Current Midget Indians remain a .500 team in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League after splitting four weekend games at home.
The Tribe won both games over the visiting Saskatoon Cubs on Saturday before dropping both games to the Regina Wolfpack to move to 3-3 during six straight home games at home early this season.
The Indians opened the weekend on a dominating note as they scored six runs in the first inning to go with Zac Mackay’s 11strikeout one-hitter to win 9-0. Mackay, the reigning SPBL Pitcher of the Year, walked one batter and allowed only a single in the win. He also tripled, singled, walked, scored twice, stole a base, and had one run batted in.
The Tribe only had three hits in the game but worked their way on base with six walks and stole 10 bags. Andrew Garland doubled, scored and knocked in a run. BJ Moen singled, knocked in two runs, and stole two bases.
They continued to circle the bases in game two with an 11-1 win over the Cubs. Brandon Schultz picked up the win with four scoreless innings while allowing five hits, zero walks, and striking out two. Darby Crozier pitched one inning in relief to help seal the win.
The Indians had only four hits in the game but got on base with 12 walks and then stole 10 bases. Reid Fritzke doubled, had four RBI, scored, and stole his second base of the season. Kade Behm and Matt Bissonnette each stole three bases in the mercy rule shortened contest.
The Indians lost their first game Sunday 15-5 to the Regina Wolfpack. Moen suffered the loss with relief appearances from Garland and Behm. Crozier stole four bases out of the nine-hole as the Indians finished with eight stolen bases. Fritzke hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Indians ahead 3-0 and they led 5-1 after two innings before allowing 14 unanswered runs.
They played their first close game of the weekend on Sunday and lost 7-5. Mitchell Peterson suffered the loss while Brayden Karmazinuk and Bissonnette each made relief appearances.
Mackay finished with a single, a double, a RBI, and a run scored in the loss. George Hudec singled twice, stole a base, and had one RBI. Garland also singled twice to improve his average to .333.
