Southwest cowboys earning cash at CCA rodeos

The Canadian Cowboy’s Associatio­n’s season continues with rodeos across the prairies this summer.

The CCA made a stop in Eston on June 7-8 where 12 Southwest cowboys earned money close to their home turf.

The top Southwest finisher was Swift Current’s Blaine Switzer, who worked with Matt Switzer to place first in Team Roping in 5.4 seconds for $1,315. Shamrock’s Kevin Turner combined with Tyler Paicu to place third in 6.1 seconds for $861.

Mankota’s Kassidy Williamson continued her recent success with another win in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 14.02 seconds for $194.

Leader’s Cody Resch placed second in Novice Saddle Bronc. He scored a 64 for $76, one point back of White City’s Tyrel Fouhse, who notched a 65 for top spot.

Maple Creek’s Ross Kreutzer continued to be among the leaders in Saddle Bronc with a second-place finish in Eston. He scored a 74 on Brush Popper to take home $383. Big Valley’s Wyatt Thurston won the event with a 75 on Rock Bottom.

Piapot’s Brady Bertram was second in Bareback with a 72 on Little Sister for $282. Colter Harder of Big Valley won the event with an 80 on The General.

Maple Creek’s Jared Parsonage placed second in Bull Riding. He scored a 77 on Strong Foundation for $508. Cadogan’s Lonnie West won the event with a 78 on What’s Cookin. Shaunavon’s Tanner Allemand tied for third in Bull Riding with a 76 on Biker for $355.

Kyle’s Chad Hantelman needed just 5.9 seconds to get the job done in Steer Wrestling to finish in third spot for $324. Esterhazy’s David Sandilands won the event in 4.9 seconds.

Three cowboys found the money in Tie Down Roping to round out the Southwest money earners. Clay Barnson and Kyle Lucas tied for the lead in 8.6 seconds.

Blaine Switzer was third in 9.4 seconds for $437. Val Marie’s Wyatt Hayes tied for fourth in 12.7 seconds for $262. Swift Current’s Kevin Folk was sixth in 17.1 seconds for $115.

Nine Southwest competitor­s finished in the money one week later at the Pilot Butte Community Rodeo on June 14-16. Maple Creek’s Kerry Maynes finished Ladies Barrel Racing in 18.50 seconds during the final Frontier Days Rodeo performanc­e on Sunday.

Waldeck’s Scott and Tuftin McLeod tied for top spot in Team Roping as they needed only 5.9 seconds for $1,187. They tied Shane Dolgopol (Cypress County) and Travis Kellett (Picture Butte) for first place in the rodeo.

Turner and Paicu were fourth in Team Roping in 6.5 seconds for $627. Riley Hayes (Val Marie) and Tyce McLeod (Waldeck) placed fifth in 7.0 seconds for $403.

Kassidy Williamson was second in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 16.32 seconds for $162. She finished just off the pace of Wood Mountain’s Nicole Pana, who finished in 16.28 seconds.

Shauna Peters finished third in Ladies Barrel Racing. The Cabri cowgirl finished the pattern in 16.22 seconds to take home $541. Rockglen’s Robbi Nace won the event in 15.88 seconds.

Beechy’s Travis Jansen finished third in Bull Riding with a 65 on Flash Point for $338. Whitewood’s Flint Vayro won the event with an 81 on Prairie Dog.

Lucky Lake’s Tyler Getz rounded out the Southwest money winners in Pilot Butte. He placed sixth in Tie Down Roping in 13.5 seconds for $113. Coronach’s Vaughn Warken won the event in 9.8 seconds.

Only six Southweste­rners were able to bring home money from the Long Creek Rodeo in Radville, all six earning money in the roping events.

Tuftin McLeod led the way with a pair of strong performanc­es. He and Scott McLeod placed second in Team Roping in 5.3 seconds for $1,023. Tuftin McLeod also finished fifth in Tie Down Roping in 10.3 seconds for $198.

Team Roping was won by Kent Drake (Moose Jaw) and Vaughn Warken (Coronach) in 5.2 seconds. Stewart Valley’s Dallas Kornfeld teamed up with Randy Paicu (Avonlea) to place fourth in 6.2 seconds for $597.

Tie Down Roping was won by Indian Head’s Bruce Dunham in 8.3 seconds. Val Marie’s Wyatt Hayes was second in 8.6 seconds for $505. Blaine Switzer finished fourth in 9.7 seconds for $294. Swift Current’s Keith Folk rounded out the Southwest money winners in Radville with a sixth-place showing in Tie Down Roping in 11.0 seconds for $105.

The CCA calendar will continue this weekend with the Frontier Days Rodeo in Swift Current on June 28-30, the Raymond Rodeo on June 29 - July 1, and the Onion Lake Rodeo on June 30 - July 1.
