Bailey leads Southwest at Junior Provincial­s

Atalented contingent of Southwest golfers took part in the Golf Saskatchew­an Junior Men’s Championsh­ip at the Hillcrest Golf Club last week.

Shaunavon’s Corey Bailey was the top Southwest finisher as he tied for ninth with a 10-over-par threeround total of 223. Bailey opened the tournament with a 76 on Monday. He followed up with a 73 on Tuesday and finished the tournament with a 74 on Wednesday.

A pair of hometown golfers tied for the lead on their home course. Mike Flegel and Leighton Bearchell were tied entering the final round and both shot 70’s on day three to finish one-under-par. Bearchell defeated Flegel in a sudden death hole to claim the Provincial Championsh­ip.

Blake Morrow, golfing out of the Elmwood Golf and Country Club, was the top Swift Current golfer at Provincial­s. He tied for 16th at 22-over-par. Morrow came up with his best round on Monday with a 73, followed up with an 84, and bounced back with a 78 on the final day.

Not far behind was Logan Tisdale out of the Elmwood in 18th spot. He finished 24over after three rounds of golfing (78-78-81-237).

Austin Paulhus, also out of Elmwood, tied for 24th in Moose Jaw. He shot an opening round 78, followed by a pair of 82’s to finish 29-over for the tournament.

Swift Current’s Taylor Kinch represente­d the Chinook Players Club in Moose Jaw. He tied for 29th at 31over. Kinch improved with each round, opening with an 89, followed by a 79 and a 76.

Swift Current’s Brody Knelson checked in at 42nd after three days. He finished 42-over with rounds of 85, 84, and 86. Eastend’s Kirk Humphrey was right behind Knelson in 43rd place. He was 43-over with rounds of 81, 87, and 88.

Swift Current’s Jessy-Lee Lacher finished in a tie for 45th. He was 45-over after rounds of 90, 80, and 88. Swift Current’s Matt Reimer also represente­d the Chinook Players Club and tied for 50th with rounds of 95, 86, and 87.

Cole Bissonnett­e, golfing out of Elmwood, rounded out the Southwest contingent. He placed 52nd with an 87 and two rounds of 91.

In the Junior Women’s Championsh­ip, Prince Albert’s Brooke Hobson shot a 79 on all three days to win the title for a second straight year with a 12-shot win over Regina’s Lisa Reid.
