The Swift Current Bantam Indians came up just short of a championship at the Bantam AA Provincials in North Battleford.

The Bantam Indians opened the tournament with a 15-1 win over North Battleford. They stumbled Saturday with an 11-7 loss to Weyburn.

The Tribe bounced back with a 10-1 win over Muenster and got help in the other game to clinch top spot in their pool.

“The boys played well, we came through with clutch hits and clutch plays at the right time to make it to the final,” said head coach Darwin Schultz.

Swift Current met Melfort in the semifinal and advanced with a 7-3 win to set up a rematch against Muenster in the gold medal game where they lost.

“It was a tough one in the final. We ran into a good hitting team.

“I am very proud of the boys’ year,” said Schultz.

The Bantam Indians will host the 2013 Western Canadian Championships in Swift Current on August 16-18.

They won’t have much of a layoff between now and Westerns.

They will take part in their Regina AAA League playoffs this weekend.

10 of the players will represent Zone Three at a tournament in Saskatoon the weekend prior to Westerns.

The team can add players to their roster for Westerns and Schultz said they plan to do just that.

“We plan to add three or four pitchers because we know that Westerns is a tough tournament and we want to do as well as we can.”
