Walk for Wishes helps make wishes come true

-

An enthusiastic group of 30 participants took to the Chinook Pathway on Saturday to participate in Swift Current’s 2013 edition of the Wishmaker Walk for Wishes.

The group enjoyed a fall morning three-kilometre stroll along the Swift Current Creek in the fundraising walk for the Children’s Wish Foundation. The event boasted a superhero theme, with a number of the young participants dressed up as their favourite superhero.

Dyanna Janzen, local Wishmaker Walk for Wishes organizing committee chairperson, said the family-friendly event was also an opportunity to increase awareness of what the Foundation does.

“We help children with life threatening illnesses get a break from their treatments,” Janzen noted.

“In some cases we send them and their families on a wish trip, and that’s all we do is grant wishes.”

Nationally, 471 wishes has been granted across Canada as of the first week of October.

However, the Children’s Wish Foundation has also had a profound impact in Saskatchewan and right here in the Southwest. There are a number of Southwest Wish families, and following the walk Janzen shared the story of a wish granted to a family from Pambrun who had a daughter dealing with leukaemia.

“I think that these kids deserve to have some sort of relief from their illness, from what they suffer daily,” Janzen said.

Swift Current was one of 11 Saskatchewan communities holding a walk during the Wishmaker Walk Day on Saturday.
