Le­gion­naires break goose egg against Con­tacts

The Swift Cur­rent Home Hard­ware Le­gion­naires picked up their first win of the 2013-14 Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League reg­u­lar sea­son with a 3-1 vic­tory over the host Saskatoon Con­tacts Sun­day.

Shane Blomquist made 30 saves and the Le­gion­naires got goals from three dif­fer­ent skaters in the win. The Con­tacts led 1-0 af­ter one pe­riod on a Kade Ke­hoe power play goal. Swift Cur­rent re­sponded in the sec­ond pe­riod with a power play goal from Bryce Hall and a short­handed goal from Con­nor Odelein. Kolby John­son helped seal the win in the third pe­riod with another power play goal. Chase­ton Sare added two as­sists, while Odelein and Reid Fritzke added sin­gles. Satur­day, the Le­gion­naires were on the wrong end of a 5-2 fi­nal against the host Saskatoon Blaz­ers. The Le­gion­naires out­shot the Blaz­ers 33-29 but could only beat Brett Pon­gracz for two goals. Tan­ner Brew­ster and Cody Spa­grud scored for Swift Cur­rent with as­sists from Fritzke, Hall, and Tris­tan Her­man­son. Blomquist suf­fered the loss with 24 saves.

The Le­gion­naires earned a brief 2-1 lead when Spa­grud and Brew­ster scored 47 sec­onds apart in the sec­ond pe­riod be­fore the Blaz­ers counted the fi­nal four goals.

The Le­gion­naires had a close call Thurs­day as they searched for their first reg­u­lar sea­son win in Moose Jaw.

The Le­gion­naires, be­hind a 30-save per­for­mance Blomquist, lost 2-1 to the host Moose Jaw Gen­er­als. Shane Collins put the Gen­er­als ahead in the sec­ond pe­riod and Ri­ley Can­non made it 2-0 with a power play goal 1:08 into the third pe­riod.

Kyler Sachkowski scored for Swift Cur­rent in the third pe­riod but the Le­gion­naires were un­able to draw even, de­spite out­shoot­ing the hosts 9-7 in the fi­nal pe­riod. Jarett Ger­lach and Carter Do­erk­sen picked up as­sists on the goal. Grant Na­h­er­niak earned the win for Moose Jaw with 17 saves.

Sun­day’s win moved the Le­gion­naires record to 1-5-10 on the sea­son. The Le­gion­naires are back on home ice tonight when the Bat­tle­fords Stars (4-0-1-0) visit the Credit Union iplex at 8:15 p.m. The Le­gion­naires will also host the Tis­dale Tro­jans (4-1-0-0) on Satur­day at 8:15 p.m. and Sun­day at 12:30 p.m. The Tro­jans’ line-up in­cludes Swift Cur­rent Bron­cos prospect Bran­don Arnold and for­mer Ban­tam Raiders for­ward Tan­ner Nagel. Vet­eran for­ward Con­nor Odelein leads the Swift Cur­rent Le­gion­naires with four goals in seven games this sea­son.
