SPCA showcasing work at Animal Shelter
The Swift Current SPCA is trying to raise more awareness of the important work done at the SPCA Animal Shelter through a series of tour opportunities this week.
Following the declaration of March 2-8 being declared by Swift Current City Council as Animal Shelter Awareness Week, the SPCA is offering daily tours at their Animal Shelter at 2101 Knight Crescent. Tours run at 1-3 p.m. from March 4 to 7 where the public can have a behind the scenes look at the work done at the facility.
“When an animal enters the Shelter, there is a flurry of activity,” explained SPCA Board President Graham Parsons. “Their condition is evaluated by the Staff and if necessary, and if needed a Veterinarian is called in. Testing or treatments for minor injuries are also done by the Vet, although we recommend that homeless animals with serious illness or injuries be taken directly to a Vet Clinic. If Staff suspects the presence of a communicable disease, the animal is placed in our Quarantine Room while they receive treatment. Other animals have to be placed on a program of medication for minor ailments.”
All animals are spayed or neutered by a Veterinarian before the adoption is complete and they leave the Shelter permanently. This process may take many weeks, as an animal must be of a certain age for these procedures to be done.
