The Southwest Booster - - NEWS - SUBMITTED BY THE SWIFT CURRENT AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an panel discussion on April 1st from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Living Sky Casino. This event is the Property Tax Assessment Process and will include a panel of up to seven property tax experts. “If you have ever wanted to learn more about how our property taxes are calculated or how the system works, this is the community’s chance to come find out.” said Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce CEO Darla Lindbjerg. “Most people, myself included, can get overwhelmed by the technicalities around the process. The Chamber’s board of directors has tasked me with property taxes as one of our organization’s focus areas in 2014. We want to educate the public on how the process works right off the bat and let them ask their questions in a setting where a variety of experts are present so we can get some definite and clear answers as an outcome.”

The Property Tax Assessment Process panel discussion will include local, provincial and chamber experts, some of whom who have spent 20+ years working in this field. These include:

• Michael Kehler, City of Swift Current Property Tax Assessment Office

• Kent Smith-Windsor, Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce - Executive Director

• John Hopkins, Regina Chamber of Commerce CEO

• Steve Suchan & Associate, SAMA - Managing Director of Technical Standards & Policy

• Advisory Services Representatives, Ministry of Government Relations

“The last time sessions were held to explain property tax was around two years ago I believe.” said Lindbjerg. “I have been told that out of two sessions only three people attended. Our membership has been bringing this issue to our table, so I believe there are some questions out there in the community, but ultimately numbers are what dictates whether something is an issue or not for our community. If the room is full, we know it is something we need to be taking seriously and dealing with.”

The format of the event will start off with John Hopkins, CEO of the Regina Chamber of Commerce giving a Property Tax for Dummies overview of the process, Michael Kehler will talk about how the process works locally, followed by SAMA explaining some of the rules and regulations surrounding the process and upcoming changes. Kent Smith-Windsor, Executive Director of the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce will be unveiling research results undertaken by Chambers across Saskatchewan last year through the C.D. Howe Institute’s Study.
